Google’s foray into driverless cars was not PR gimmick folks. It was the real deal and guess what – California is behind it all the way.

Gov. Jerry Brown will sign legislation that will pave the way for driverless cars to hit the roads in California. The bill would establish safety and performance regulations for autonomous vehicles.

Representatives for Brown say the governor will sign the legislation at the Mountain View headquarters of Google, which has been developing autonomous car technology and lobbying for this type of California legislation for quite some time.

Autonomous cars use computers, sensors and GPS technology to operate independently. Backers say they have the potential to make roads safer, pointing out that nearly all car accidents are a result of human error. But, of course, the bigger question will be – who will be to blame if there is an auto accident involving one of these vehicles? Google? Or, the GPS software and computer makers themselves?

This is sure to become a hot topic as autonomous cars join our ubiquitous traffic culture here in California.
